From HR Pro to Pro Writer

It’s been more than 20 years since my first freelance writing project and I’ve spent the last 15+ years in content marketing. I wrote for fun long before that and I’m still having a lot of fun.

I write primarily about employee engagement, work culture, benefits, and technology. I also provide strategic operations and business support to founders and small teams that need an experienced, independent brain to help figure things out and get things done.

My work generally falls into two areas:

  • Content marketing: B2B Tech brands that serve HR/People Ops executive audiences
  • Strategic operations: Founders and small teams that need help with research, projects, systems, problem-solving, and the many things that fall somewhere between “I need a VA” and “I need a COO” (If this is you, visit me here.)

I’ve built long-term relationships with clients ranging from startups to global technology companies, often becoming a go-to partner for projects that require research, judgment, and a lot of independent problem-solving. For 10 years, I also provided behind-the-scenes business and editorial support to a high-earning technology writer and author, taking ownership of research, pitches, projects, and other work that created space for the founder to focus on growth and the work only they could do.

Prior to becoming a full-time freelancer, I spent nearly 10 years in corporate HR, focusing on talent acquisition and recruiting. I held employee and contract roles in the finance, healthcare, technology, retail, entertainment, and communications industries—noting, of course, that people are people no matter what line of business they are in. As an HR consultant, I worked with small- and medium-sized businesses to develop sustainable hiring practices, establish fair employment policies, build robust onboarding experiences, and create inclusive professional development programs. More recently, I’ve worked on a number of projects related to workplace diversity and inclusion, both in policy and practice.

I hold a degree in Ethnic, Gender, and Labor Studies from the University of Washington, where I studied race and gender dynamics in the workplace while working alongside veterans of the civil rights movement to create oral and written histories of Southern freedom struggles.

I live near Portland, Oregon, where I spend my free time chasing waterfalls with my family, reading (currently into solarpunk), and training our new puppy. I also believe wholeheartedly in the healing power of freshly baked bread.
